A New Jersey paycheck has more state lines than most. Besides income tax withholding, employees pay into unemployment, workforce, disability and family leave programs, each with its own rate and wage cap. The calculator above shows them separately, so you can see which line is which on your stub.

New Jersey income tax withholding and rate tables A to E

New Jersey does not use one formula for everyone. Your NJ-W4 picks a table, and the state publishes tables for weekly, biweekly, semimonthly and monthly pay. For Rate A on a weekly paycheck, the marginal rates run 1.5%, 2%, 3.9%, 6.1%, 7%, 9.9% and 11.8%. Rate B, used by joint filers and heads of household, adds a 2.7% step between the 2% and 3.9% rows, so those filers reach higher rates at higher pay.

First your employer subtracts an allowance amount for each allowance on NJ-W4 line 4. For 2026 the amounts are $19.20 weekly, $38.40 biweekly, $41.60 semimonthly and $83.30 monthly. Then they find the row for your pay, add the row’s base amount and apply the row’s rate to the wages above its starting point. Line 5 of the NJ-W4 can add a fixed extra amount to every check.

The state’s own example is a single worker paid $300 weekly with one allowance. After the $19.20 allowance, $280.80 is taxed at 1.5% for $4.21. A second example, $700 weekly with one allowance, falls in the 3.9% row and works out to $11.84.

One caution on the tables. The published withholding tables apply to wages paid on and after October 1, 2020, and the newest guide we found is dated September 2025. We found no 2026 revision, so the calculator uses the tables as published.

New Jersey payroll taxes calculator: UI, WF/SWF, TDI and FLI

These contributions come out on top of income tax. For 2026, New Jersey’s Department of Labor lists the employee rates as 0.3825% for unemployment insurance and 0.0425% for workforce development and the supplemental workforce fund. Both apply to the first $44,800 of wages. Temporary disability insurance is 0.19% and family leave insurance is 0.23%, both on the first $171,100.

On $2,000 of wages, that works out to $7.65 for UI, $0.85 for WF/SWF, $3.80 for TDI and $4.60 for FLI, or $16.90 in total. The state puts the maximum 2026 worker contribution at $325.09 for TDI and $393.53 for FLI. Because each line stops at its own wage base, a high earner sees the UI and WF lines drop off first, then TDI and FLI later in the year. Employers with an approved private plan may collect different employee rates, and the calculator uses the state plan rates.

What counts as taxable wages in New Jersey

Pre-tax savings are treated differently from the federal rules. Under the NJ-WT guide, 401(k) contributions up to the federal limit and cafeteria plan salary reductions are not New Jersey taxable wages. Contributions to other retirement plans such as 403(b) and 457 plans are taxable. If you use a 403(b), your New Jersey withholding can be higher than a 401(k) saver with the same pay.

New Jersey hourly paycheck and overtime

Choose hourly, enter your rate, weekly hours and overtime hours, and the calculator pays the overtime at time and a half. New Jersey withholding is then looked up for the larger period, so an overtime week can move you into a higher row of the table for that check only.

Taking the exempt status or extra withholding

An NJ-W4 marked exempt on line 6 means no New Jersey income tax is withheld from your pay. The exempt thresholds are $10,000 of wages plus other taxable income for single and married filing separately, and $20,000 for joint, head of household and qualifying widow(er) filers.

Tax year 2026. Valid 2026-01-01 to 2026-12-31. Checked 2026-10-24.

New Jersey percentage method (NJ-WT guide Sept 2025 + 'Tables for Percentage Method of Withholding', paid on and after Oct 1, 2020 - newest published; no 2026 revision found). Steps: (1) Pick rate table from Form NJ-W4: filing status box 1 (Single) or 3 (Married/Civil Union Partner Separate) -> Rate A; box 2 (Joint), 4 (Head of Household) or 5 (Qualifying Widow(er)) with line 3 blank -> Rate B; if line 3 has a letter A-E (wage chart choice) use that table. (2) Taxable wages = period wages minus (NJ-W4 line 4 allowances x allowance value for the pay period: weekly 19.20, biweekly 38.40, semimonthly 41.60, monthly 83.30, quarterly 250, semiannual 500, annual 1,000, daily 2.70); floor 0. Wages may be rounded to the nearest dollar (optional per guide; not rounded here). (3) In the table for the payroll period find the row with over <= taxable wages <= but-not-over; tax = base + rate x (wages - over). (4) Add NJ-W4 line 5 extra amount. Employee marked EXEMPT on line 6 -> 0. Supplemental wages paid separately: withhold with no allowances. 401(k) contributions up to the federal limit and cafeteria plan (Section 125) salary reductions are not NJ-taxable wages (NJ-WT Sept 2025 pp.6-7, 16); contributions to other retirement plans such as 403(b) and 457 are taxable. Employee-paid payroll contributions 2026 (NJ DOL): UI 0.3825% and WF/SWF 0.0425% on the first 44,800; TDI 0.19% and FLI 0.23% on the first 171,100. Rate letters: Rate C/D/E tables included for NJ-W4 line 3 choices.

New Jersey paycheck questions

How much tax is taken out of my paycheck in New Jersey?

Federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500 in 2026) and Medicare (1.45%), New Jersey income tax withholding, and four employee-paid state contributions for unemployment, workforce development, temporary disability and family leave insurance.

Which New Jersey withholding rate table applies to me?

It comes from your NJ-W4. Single or married/civil union partner filing separately uses Rate A. Joint, head of household or qualifying widow(er) with line 3 blank uses Rate B. If you wrote a letter from A to E on line 3, that table applies instead.

What are the 2026 New Jersey UI, WF/SWF, TDI and FLI rates?

Employees pay 0.3825% for unemployment insurance and 0.0425% for workforce development and supplemental workforce fund on the first $44,800 of wages. They pay 0.19% for temporary disability insurance and 0.23% for family leave insurance on the first $171,100.

Is a New Jersey paycheck calculator different for hourly workers?

The tax steps are the same. Choose hourly, enter your rate, weekly hours and overtime hours, and the calculator pays overtime at time and a half before it applies New Jersey withholding and the payroll contributions.

Does my 401(k) reduce New Jersey taxable wages?

Contributions up to the federal limit to a 401(k) and Section 125 cafeteria plan salary reductions are not New Jersey taxable wages, according to the state's NJ-WT guide. Contributions to a 403(b) or 457 plan are taxable for New Jersey.

Can I be exempt from New Jersey withholding?

You can mark yourself exempt on line 6 of the NJ-W4 if your wages plus other taxable income are $10,000 or less when you file as single or married filing separately, or $20,000 or less for joint, head of household or qualifying widow(er).
